I wrote:

      due in section on Thursday or Friday October 10 or 11, 1996.

                 (Postponed a day or so for fall break.)"
                  ^^^^^^^^^

The 'postponed' was correct. Please change 10 to 17 and  11 to 18.
The cosmic rays messed up a bit of the local wiring causing
frequent errors of this type, even on days without sun spots.
