Dear Math 293: 9/5/96 1) This is the first mailing to this list. We will assume everyone is on board. Check with your friends to make sure they are with the program. 2) Here is a summary of commands that may be useful email to contents of message effect -------- -------------------- ------ listproc subscribe math293-L firstname last get on mailing list listproc unsubscribe math293-L get off mailing list listproc index math293-L index of all messages listproc get math293-L math293-l9609b get message math293-l9609b listproc review math293-L get a list of subscribers math293-L anything (e.g., like this) message to class (from staff only) 3) We will be using the following matlab files: dfield.m for homework 2 dfsolve.m (used by dfield.m) pplane.m for later homeworks ppsolve.m (used by pplane.m) These are supposed to be on the MACs in Upson in the math 293 folder. When I checked this afternoon dfsolve was not yet there. So ... if they are not where you want them (Upson, Hollister, your room) you can down-load them your self by going to the home page of John Polking who wrote them. a) go to http://math.rice.edu/~polking with Netscape. b) find your way to the list of programs by clicking here and there. c) download the programs, they will appear as text in a Netscape window. d) copy and paste the text into text files of the appropriate names (ie the names above). e) open the files from inside MATLAB. These files should work on more or less any computer, including the upson MACs. Just open dfield, read the opening comments, execute it, and poke around to see what you have control over. dfield is basically a cool and easy to use demonstration program. 4) The bookstore said the Pratap Matlab book may be in by friday, for those of you who are still waiting to learn. 5) Matlab hint for PC users to save file myfile.m save it as (myfile.m). This prevents the addition of .txt at the end of the file name which keeps MATLAB from finding the file (so I was told by one succesful PC user of MATLAB). -Andy Ruina T&AM, Kimball Hall (wk) 227 Bryant Ave (hm) ruina@cornell.edu Cornell, Ithaca,NY,14850 Ithaca, NY 14850 FAX: 607-255-2011 607-277-5675
